House of Assembly

House of Assembly Measures
BACKGROUNDER

As a result of the General Election in February, 1996, the number of Members in the House of Assembly was reduced from 52 to 48. The savings for 1996-97 in Members' Sessional and tax free allowances (with 4 less Members), including support staff salaries plus constituency and travel expenses is approximately $400,000.

As directed by Treasury Board and with the approval of the commission of Internal Economy, the Members' allowances and benefits have been reduced by 11.2% ($265,000) for this fiscal year. The Internal Economy Commission will implement necessary measures in this regard.
