Victim service workers provide information, assistance and support through liaison with the police, prosecutors, the courts and correctional services. They provide court preparation and assistance with victim impact statements; offer referral to appropriate programs and services for longer term needs; and provide information, education and support to communities and non-governmental agencies concerning the needs of victims. Direct services are also provided through contracted professional services to provide counselling for severely traumatized victims. Funding has also been available to community non-profit organizations for short term projects designed to serve the needs of victims in a given geographical area.
Despite the fact that funding available to community non-profit groups for short term projects has been curtailed as a result of this year's budget process, the funding provided in the 1996-97 budget will be sufficient to allow Government to retain the fundamental integrity of direct services to victims through its regional offices. In addition, the same level and quality of contracted counselling services available to victims of crime will be maintained. The commitment made by the Department of Justice as part of the Provincial Strategy Against Violence will also be upheld. This commitment by the Department of Justice targets rural areas and will allow improved delivery of direct services to victims of crime in remote areas.
