Increase in fees for claims for recording from
$5.00 to $10.00 per claim
Backgrounder
- All Canadian jurisdictions charge a fee for the recording
of mineral claims. This fee is intended to cover the cost
of processing and administration of the application. The
fees are generally low to enable the prospectors or
individual without financial resources to participate in
mineral exploration.
- The current Newfoundland recording fee of $5.00 per claim
is lower than most jurisdictions in Canada when compared
on a "per hectare" basis.
- The claims recording fee has stayed at the low cost of
$5.00 since 1978.
- The fee per claim varies across Canada from $5.00 to
$15.00 and the size of a claim also varies from province
to province.
- The increase to $10.00 per claim will provide an addition
annual revenue of approximately $100,000, yet will not
serve as a disincentive to prospectors or individuals
wishing to stake claims.
