Reductions for Fire Protection Services - St.
John's & Corner Brook
BACKGROUNDER
- The Province has, for quite some time, adopted the
practice of providing a "grant-in-lieu" of
taxes to both municipalities, in recognition of the
presence, in both municipalities, of a significant amount
of Provincial facilities.
- Due to severe financial restraints, government is unable
to reimburse the cities at the 15% level.
- The payment to the City of St. John's for 1996 will be
$1,550,318 which is a reduction of $400,000.
- The payment to the City of Corner Brook for 1996 will be
$397,560 which is a reduction of $100,000.
