NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR - ON THE LEADING EDGE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The IT sector is focused on creating strategic partnerships, developing products and services and bringing them to national and international markets. Over 150 companies operate in the high technology community. The workforce is made up of 3000 IT professionals with an equal number of supporting personnel. Newfoundland and Labrador's IT sector has proven strengths in a number of areas.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

Java Development Centre

Java and Network Computing will have a major effect on the IT sector. The Province has acquired early expertise in Java. Work is ongoing to build on this and access larger markets through development of a Java Development Centre.

Scientific Visualization/Graphical Representation

Work is continuing in this area with international-scale partners. As well, new projects are being launched at Memorial University and in the provincial college system.

New Media/Multimedia

Small firms such as INNOVA Multimedia, IDON East, and Media Touch Technologies are developing a host of educational software for use in the K-12 school system.

DISTANCE EDUCATION / TELEHELTH

The Open Learning and Information Network (OLIN) brings together a number of partners in the delivery of distance education. Newfoundland's Telemedicine Centre/TETRA is the longest standing telemedicine program in North America. The Province is developing a reputation for excellence in telemedicine and distance education.

MARINE COMMUNICATIONS / GEOMATICS

Our marine communications sector is renowned for its strengths in a number of areas. For example, Nautical Data International is the sole worldwide distributor of electronic charts and other digital products to the Canadian Hydrographic Service.

TOTAL BUSINESS SOLUTIONS

As the largest systems integrator in Atlantic Canada, NewTel provides and manages total integrated business solutions for clients based on their regional communications and Information Technology requirements.

INFRASTRUCTURE

High Speed Networking & Wireless Communications

Cable Atlantic's new state-of-the-art hybrid fibre optic-coaxial (HFC) network is among the most advanced networks in the world. NewTel recently introduced its high speed Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) connection. Stratos Mobile Networks, headquartered in St. John's, NF, is an international multi-network mobile satellite service provider.

Innovation in the IT sector is embodied in specialized technology applications. Some of these include Machine Vision Technology, Acoustics and Sensors.
