The Department of Industry, Trade and Technology promotes business investment in Newfoundland and Labrador and the export of goods, technologies and services to markets worldwide.
The Department also has a mandate to maximize local industrial benefits from large scale natural resource-based initiatives and promote innovative sciences and technologies.
The completion of the Hibernia offshore oil project, the construction of the oil transshipment facility, the development of the Terra Nova offshore oil project, the imminent development of the Voisey's Bay mineral project, and the recent announcement on the Lower Churchill development have resulted in a re-directing of departmental resources and a re-evaluation of programs to better serve business.

Operation ONLINE, a public/private sector arms length organization was designed to work with the Province to develop and promote Newfoundland and Labrador's information technology sector.

Export and investment prospects require the right business intelligence, contacts and access to the required skills to carry out their business. Departmental staff provide critical business advice, information and support to local firms looking to export.
Marketing and investment personnel also offer a first point of contact for international firms seeking to invest in Newfoundland and Labrador or form joint ventures with local companies.

Business teams are tasked with the maximization of benefits accruing from major projects and development initiatives such as the Voisey's Bay mineral project and petroleum industry projects like Hibernia, Terra Nova, White Rose and Hebron.

The Department evaluates economic productivity and competitiveness in sectors of the economy that have been targeted as areas for new growth, especially in emerging non-resource based sectors such as manufacturing, professional services and environmental industries. Staff develop strategies and initiate market-supplier development forums to aid in achieving growth within these sectors.
